Royal Opera House

ROH Cinema Season 2016/17

OH Live Cinema brings world-class opera and ballet to cinemas, live and in high-definition direct from the stage of the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, to more than 1500 venues around the world, including those in the USA, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Japan and Australia.

The 2016/17 ROH Live Cinema season features 12 live broadcasts – six operas and six ballets -including 2016 Olivier Award winner Woolf Works, in a season celebrating Wayne McGregor’s ten years as Resident Choreographer of The Royal Ballet. This critically acclaimed ballet is inspired by the writings of Virginia Woolf.

Other productions include Peter Wright’s Royal Ballet classic The Nutcracker, the perfect ballet at Christmastime; the return of The Sleeping Beauty, the Company’s first ballet on the Covent Garden stage in 1946; a new production by Spanish director Àlex Ollé of Bellini’s Norma, a work which returns to the Royal Opera House for the first time in 30 years; Jonas Kaufmann’s highly anticipated role debut in Verdi’s Otello conducted by Antonio Pappano; and a new production of Mozart’s Così fan tutte, directed by Jan Philipp Gloger in his ROH directorial debut.

The season also features Kenneth MacMillan’s Anastasia, inspired by the true story of Anna Anderson (a woman who believed she was the youngest daughter of Tsar Nicholas II); Offenbach’s fantastical operatic drama Les Contes d’Hoffmann led by internationally acclaimed Italian tenor, Vittorio Grigòlo (who made his Royal Opera debut in 2010); the first revival of Verdi’s searing opera Il trovatore; Puccini’s Madama Butterfly conducted by Antonio Pappano; Balanchine’s Jewels on screen for the first time; and three of Ashton’s best loved works (The Dream, Symphonic Variations and Marguerite and Armand) together in one night.
